2025 is preliminary (INEGI, 3 August 2026); 2015-2024 are definitive. Divided by the population INEGI uses for its own rate: INEGI's estimate from its Marco de Muestreo de Viviendas for 30 June 2025 (130,667,929). The series uses CONAPO's Conciliación Demográfica 1950-2019 mid-year population for 2015-2019 and INEGI's estimate for 2020-2025, as INEGI does. The same population is used for both lines.

Why the numbers differ

  • INEGI counts deaths whose death certificate records an assault, whatever happens in court; SESNSP counts victims in prosecutors' case files, classified under criminal law as homicidio doloso or feminicidio.
  • INEGI puts a death in the year it was registered (96% of homicides registered in 2024 happened that year, calculated from INEGI's 2024 microdata); SESNSP puts it in the month the case file was opened, and states revise past months later. (source, retrieved 2026-10-25)
  • The gap differs widely by state: in 2024, INEGI's count by state of occurrence ranged from 15% below SESNSP's in Oaxaca to 41% above in the State of México (329 INEGI deaths had no known state). Calculated from INEGI's 2024 microdata and SESNSP's victims file, both in the sources table. (source, retrieved 2026-10-25)
  • The national gap moves over time: INEGI was 2.7% above SESNSP in 2019, 8.5% in 2024 and 15.0% in 2025, when INEGI's figure was still preliminary. Calculated from INEGI's yearly counts and SESNSP's victims file, both in the sources table and the chart. (source, retrieved 2026-10-25)
