Why the numbers differ

  • Kripos puts each victim in the year of the killing and SSB in the year the offence was reported to the police; FHI puts a death in the year the person died, so someone attacked late in one year who dies the next is counted in different years.
  • Kripos keeps updating its overview as investigations and trials end: cases closed as self-defence or no crime are removed and suspicious deaths later found to be homicides are added. Its count for 2023 was 38 in the 2023 edition, then 41 in the 2024 edition, then 37 in the 2025 edition. SSB fixes its figures about two weeks after the year ends, and FHI updates preliminary figures as autopsy reports arrive. (source, retrieved 2026-10-26)
  • Killings abroad and visitors: Kripos leaves out killings of or by Norwegians abroad but counts everyone killed in Norway; FHI counts only people resident in Norway, including those who die abroad, though it lacks the cause for most deaths abroad.
  • FHI's group "Drap" covers every death from an assault, including violence not meant to kill, which Kripos's murder count leaves out. In 11 of the 14 years from 2011 to 2024 FHI's count was higher than Kripos's, by up to 10 in 2013. Calculated from the FHI table and the Kripos editions in the sources table. Common mistakes

  • Treating 2011 as a normal year: it includes the 77 people killed in the terror attacks of 22 July 2011. (source, retrieved 2026-10-26)
  • Adding attempted homicides: Kripos and SSB count people killed; SSB lists attempted homicide (drapsforsøk) as a separate offence.
  • Reading SSB's yearly figure as killings in that year: it counts offences reported to the police that year.
